The method of entrusting subjects is adopted for the studies of urgent issues at present in this Shenzhen Biennial so that the biennial is turned into an engine for inspiring urban wisdom. We are fortunate to be entrusted with the subject of “Border Dissolving and Crossing”, which can be regarded as the most fundamental issue for Shenzhen, as Shenzhen was born from a border, grew up as a result of the entry and exit activities on the border, and also was transformed because of the rapid changes arising out of the “border dissolving and crossing” of such entry and exit activities. Therefore, our studies cover several levels from the space of the border city to the internal location differences and industrial structure of the city and the collective experience of urban residents etc., exploring the impact that may have been brought about by “border dissolving and crossing” from each link. The final results include the historical narration and data analysis of the border space, the analysis of core competitiveness of departments and enterprises, oral history of urban residents and a planning conception located in the Hetao Area, displayed in the forms of exhibits, a publication entitled Urban China—Regeneration of Shenzhen and architectural models. Among them, “Border Dissolving and Crossing” and “Urban Void”, are for the Shenzhen and Hong Kong Biennials respectively. Regeneration of Shenzhen is a special journal of the two places at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennial. The work style involving different perspectives also, to the utmost extent, corresponds to the “border crossing” mode of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennial.

Though Shenzhen is a coastal city, one has to drive for over 30 minutes to see the real sea.
The Baishizhou Section is at best but a stretch of a bay. The predecessors of Shennan Avenue and Binhai Avenue running from east to west, two landscaped avenues abundant in flowers and trees, are rice fields and oyster fields of fishermen of nearby villages of Baishizhou, large beaches and clusters of red mangroves as well as flocks of sea birds flying to and fro between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The earliest border line overlapped with the present Shennan Avenue, where soldiers used to keep watch.
