STABILIZING AGENT(S) General. schedule, or as ordered: a) Road l i m e that complies with the applicable requirements for l i m e of SARS 824; b) Portland cement that complies with the applicable requirements of SABS 471; c) Portland blastfurnace cement that complies with the requirements of SABS 626; d) milled blastfurnace s l a that is mixed with portland cement or l i m e i n the m a s s r a t i o specified or ordered, has a specific sufface of at least 350 d / k g (3500 cm2/g), and is such that the residue on a sieve of nominal aperture size 90 pm does not exceed 10 X by mass; e) granulated unslaked ‘ l i m e that complies with the relevant requirements of the project specification; f ) f l y ash that is mlxed with l i m e in the mass r a t i o speclfied or ordered, the mixture complying with the relevant requirements of the project specification. Storage. used. A stabilizing agent that is stored on the S i t e s h a l l be kept under a cover that provides proper protection from moisture and other factors that may promote deterioration. Storage of a s t a b i l h i n g agent in bulk i n weather-proof silos or similar containers will be permitted provided that the measurement of stahllizing agent drawn for use is by mass and not by volume. The storage capacity provided and the amount of s t a b i l i z i n g agent stored shall be sufficient to ensure that no interruption to the progress of the work is occasioned by lack of materials. Except where otherwise approved in the case of lime, no s t a b l l i z i n g agent shall be stored for longer than. 3 months. Stabilizing agent that has deteriorated or that has been contaminated shall not be used in the Works and shall be removed from the Site without delay. The stabilizing agenl-(s) shall be one or more of the following. as required in terms of the Separate storage facilities s h a l l be provided on the Site f o r each type of s t a b i l i z i n g agent WATER. Only water that is of good quality and has been approved may be used. Sea water, excessively s a l t y water. and water containlng impurities thaL may have an adverse affect on a s t a b i l i z i n g agent, w i l l not be approved. SELECTlON General Sel-ectlon. for ensuring that the materials from such sources comply with the applicable requirements of 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. Where natural materials that comply with the relevant requirements of 3.2.1 or 3.2.2 are not obtainable within economical haul distances, the Engineer may require that two or more materials from differenL sources be subjected to mechanical modification. Where subbase material 1s excavated from borrow p i t s established by the Contractor, the requirements of Subclause 5.2.2.2 of SABS 1200 D shall apply. Overburden. Where overburden has to be excavated in order to obtain suitable material. the Contractor shall advise the Engineer in good time of the extent oE the area of overburden he proposes to remove, so that an agreement can he reached on the quantity of overburden that is required to be removed.
