Stormwater and Groundwater. The Contractor's r e s p o n s i b i l i t y in terms of Subclause
5.5 of SABS 1200 A or Subclause 5.3 o f SABS 1200 AA, as relevant ( r e l a t i n g
t o water on the S i t e ) , w i l l be held t o i n c l u d e t h e p r o v i s i o n o f adequate p r o t e c t i o n
against f l o o d i n g and damage by stormwater, f l o w from springs, and seepage, and t o
include p r o v i s i o n f o r t h e r e p a i r , a t his expense, of any damage t o the Works t h a t
may a r i s e as a r e s u l t o f the inadequacy o f the p r o t e c t i o n provided by him.
Except where the use of tremies has been approved, foundation excavations f o r
s t r u c t u r e s s h a l l be kept f r e e o f water a t a l l times u n t i l they have been inspected
and approved and concrete f o o t i n g s have been cast.
Nuisance
Dust nuisance. Wherever dust from the Works, haul roads, borrow p i t s or road
d e v i a t i o n becomes a nuisance t o the p u b l i c o r damages adjacent p r o p e r t i e s , t h e
Contractor s h a l l , when so ordered by the Engineer, apply s u f f i c i e n t water or take
other measures t o lay the dust.
Water nuisance. The Contractor s h a l l d r a i n borrow areas t o prevent pools forming.
Excavated material not t o endanger or i n t e r f e r e . A l l excavated material s h a l l be so
deposited as not t o i n t e r f e r e w i t h or endanger the Works ( f o r example, by causing
the sides of an excavation t o collapse), other property or t r a f f i c . The Engineer
may order the Contractor t o remove any m a t e r i a l t h a t the Engineer considers l i a b l e
t o endanger or t o i n t e r f e r e with the Works, p r i v a t e property, t r a f f i c or
pedestrians, and t o place such material a t some other approved l o c a t i o n . If the
necessity f o r such removal is, in the opinion o f the Engineer, a r e s u l t o f some
f a u l t on the p a r t of the Contractor, the cost o f removal s h a l l be borne by the
Contractor, but otherwise it w i l l be borne by the Employer.
A l l s u r p l u s m a t e r i a l n o t r e q u i r e d f o r b a c k f i l l i n g o r forming embankments as i n d i -
cated elsewhere in t h e Contract or as may be ordered by the Engineer, and material
unsuitable f o r b a c k f i l l i n g , forming embankments or t o p s o i l i n g s h a l l be deposited on
a s i t e o r s i t e s designated by the Engineer and graded t o f r e e - d r a i n i n g slopes.
Reinstatement and Maintenance of Roads. The Contractor s h a l l r e i n s t a t e and maintain
the surfaces o f a l l roadways through which trenches or other excavations have been
made. Should any subsidence occur a t the s i t e o f such trench or other excavation,
the Contractor s h a l l immdediately restore the road surface t o i t s c o r r e c t l e v e l .
Where immediate r e s t o r a t i o n i s impracticable, the Contractor s h a l l provide b a r r i -
cading, l i g h t i n g and other safeguards in terms o f 5.1.1 u n t i l r e s t o r a t i o n i s
complete.
Road T r a f f i c Control. Where the work a f f e c t s the operation o r safety o f p u b l i c road
t r a f f i c , in a d d i t i o n t o complying w i t h the requirements of 5.1.1.1, the Contractor
s h a l l provide, erect and maintain t r a f f i c s i ns t h a t conform t o the requirements of
the South A f r i c a n road t r a f f i c sfgns manual17 in p o s i t i o n s shown on the drawings or
stated in the p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n . When r e l e v a n t and where practicable, t r a f f i c
signs s h a l l be in both o f f i c i a l languages o r otherwise a l t e r n a t e l y in English and
Afrikaans.
Where and as ordered or scheduled, or both, warning l i g h t s , an adequate number of
flagmen and appropriate barricades c l e a r l y v i s i b l e t o oncoming t r a f f i c a t a l l times
o f the day and n i g h t s h a l l a l s o be provided. If steel drums are used f o r this purpose,
they s h a l l be b a l l a s t e d w i t h s o i l , sand or stones and t h e o u t s i d e s h a l l be
whitewashed and provided with r e t r o - r e f l e c t i v e material ( i n the case of tape, of
minimum width 10 mm), red on the left-hand side facing oncoming t r a f f i c and white
on the right-hand side. The drums s h a l l be maintained in a clean and e f f e c t i v e cond
i t i o n and no stones s h a l l be placed on them.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES
S i t e Preparation
Glearing or c l e a r i n g and s t r i p p i n g of S i t e . P r i o r t o the s t a r t of excavation
proper, i f and as scheduled, a l l areas in which excavation i s t o take place or t h a t
are t o be covered by terraces, banks or s t r u c t u r e s s h a l l be
a ) cleared as s p e c i f i e d in Subclauses 5.3 and 5.4 o f SABS 1200 C, or
b) cleared as s p e c i f i e d in ( a ) above and also stripped of a l l remaining vegetable
matter and surface s o i l t o a depth of up t o 150 mm . Unsuitable material s h a l l be
disposed o f as s p e c i f i e d in 5.2.2.3.
Conservation o f t o p s o i l . When so scheduled and when there i s s u i t a b l e t o p s o i l
within the l i m i t s o f the area t o be cleared, the Contractor s h a l l remove and conserve
the t o p s o i l together with any grass or other acceptable vegetation. If it i s
not used immediately or i f it i s not s t o c k p i l e d i n windrows c l e a r o f the working
areas, the t o p s o i l s h a l l be conserved f o r l a t e r use i n the manner s p e c i f i e d in the
p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n . The Contractor w i l l n o t be required t o remove t o p s o i l from
any area in which the average depth o f s o i l is less than 150 mm .
S t r i p p i n g or removal of overburden. Except as required in terms of 5.2.2.2, where
s t r i p p i n g as s p e c i f i e d in 5.2.1.1 i s required t o include the removal o f overburden
and o t h e r u n s u i t a b l e m a t e r i a l t o depths exceeding 150 mm, the d e t a i l s w i l l be set
out in the p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n , and a separate item w i l l be scheduled.
